Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Juan Carlos and Tommie Smith lifting their black-gloved fists at the Olympics in Mexico, and César Chávez leading the UFW and his first spiritual fast. During that same year, we remember there were only 18 doctoral students of color in religion.

This question caught me completely off guard—I had never considered that my passion for social justice could come from anything but my faith. So many of the Scripture passages that speak to me most deeply are those that call for an end to oppression and injustice, that call for us to care for those who are in need, for those who are rejected and for those who are forgotten. From Jesus to Martin Luther King, Jr. my models of social justice are strongly tied to faith.

Designing a New Way Through Mentoring

By: FTE Leaders
November 30, 2021

For decades, he has been an exemplar of mentoring and support for future generations of scholars of color.

FTE is proud to announce Dr. Tat-siong Benny Liew as the recipient of the 2021 Excellence in Mentoring Award.

Established by FTE in 2017, the Excellence in Mentoring Award recognizes mentors in FTE’s doctoral community who demonstrate a sustained commitment to the advancement of scholars of color through integrative mentorship practices. Each year we seek nominations from within our network who demonstrate mentoring excellence through:

  • A sustained investment in mentoring scholars of color
  • A holistic approach to mentoring scholars of color
  • Mentoring students and peers in the academy and broader community

“Dr. Liew is that rare combination of scholar, mentor, administrator, dreamer, and pragmatist,” said FTE’s Senior Director of Learning Design Dr. Patrick B. Reyes. “He has endured what our field and discipline is, and created conditions for future generations of scholars and administrators so they do not have to endure, but rather, thrive in their work.”

In addition to mentoring rising scholars of color, Dr. Liew is the chair of the Society of Biblical Literature’s Council and serves as the series editor of T&T Clark’s Study Guides to the New Testament. He is also the author of Politics of Parousia (1999) and What Is Asian American Biblical Hermeneutics? (2008).

This is the fifth Excellence in Mentoring Award. Past awardees include:

  • Dr. Kwok Pui Lan (2017)
  • Dr. Dale P Andrews (2018)
  • Dr. Elizabeth Conde Frazier (2019)
  • Dr. AnneMarie Mingo(2020)
