Innovative Ministries: Stepping outside my box

Though the church can seem predictable at times it is still evolving and so are our calls to ministry.

I admit I can be a traditionalist and creature of habit when it comes to church, so when my Aunt Norma from Tennessee announced that she participated in a Maundy Thursday Service online, I kind of gave her a sideways glance and asked, “What’s that!?!” She explained that Pastor Audrey DeCoursey who is based in Portland Oregon has started an online church plant and worshipping community called Living Stream Church of the Brethren.

Prior to attending the online service, instructions on how to prepare for the hand washing service (in place of traditional foot washing) and the sharing of a meal were distributed to participants.

Her experience sounded truly moving and she seemed to experience community, even though her fellow congregation members were thousands of miles away. This wasn’t a one-time event. People from all over the country participate in weekly online services. Often those who participate are unable to get to a worshipping community because of a lack of access or ability. Her online church service was more than just a one-sided television/video ministry because the online congregation participates and interacts during the service.

After hearing her story about attending church online I started to think outside of my traditional mindset and expand what a worshipping community could look like. Though the church can seem predictable at times it is still evolving and so are our calls to ministry. I wonder, what kind of innovative calls to ministry are young adults experiencing and discerning?
