Let the Streets Inspire You

Whether you have a passion for art or not, artistic leaders like Banksy might inspire you to think about how you might live into your ministry and call in creative and innovative ways.

Less than 25 minutes. This is the time it typically takes one unnamed, unknown British artist to create a public work of art that provokes conversation—and most times, controversy. Banksy.

Years ago, I became inspired by true street art and discovered this artist and political activist. Some see Banksy as a vandal, while others see this artist as a street art game-changer. Some cities across the world have painted over this artist’s work, while others have affixed plexiglass over it for preservation.

While perspectives on Banksy’s artistic and political statements might vary, I continue to see Banksy as a disruptor, a change-agent, a leader, a statement, creative, authentic and committed to his or her beliefs.

Funny enough, these are some of the same qualities I see in faith leaders in our midst—both young and seasoned—who are making an impact in their communities across the world. These leaders, like Banksy:

  1. Provoke thoughtful conversations that stimulate change
  2. Remain faithful to who they are and the purpose God has for them
  3. Discover traditional and nontraditional ways to live out their call
  4. Strive for peace and justice for all God’s people
  5. Respond to the needs of today

Whether you have a passion for art or not, artistic leaders like Banksy might inspire you to think about how you might live into your ministry and call in creative and innovative ways. Unexpected places may reveal your purpose and inspire you to be a leader who shapes the future.

So, how long will it take you to live into your purpose? And what will you create or continue that will reflect God’s work in the world and your leadership? Just like the works and calls of Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Frida Kahlo, Edmona Lewis, Cai Guo-Qiang and Jackson Pollock largely vary, the possibilities for your ministry are endless.
