Completed Application Checklist

A completed application includes:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Three-page academic essay (single spaced)
  • One-page mentoring statement of need (single spaced)
  • One faculty letter of reference 
  • One community letter of reference
  • Official graduate transcripts (mailed or emailed separately)
    • Most recently attended graduate degree program (rising 1st year students only)
    • Most recently attended graduate degree program and 1st year of doctoral program (rising 2nd year students only)

Notes for Entering (Rising 1st year) Applicants Only

  • If you have accepted an offer of admission to a doctoral program, you must submit documentation to indicate your intent to attend the program of your choice.
  • The faculty letter of reference should be written by a faculty member at the school immediately preceding the doctoral program to which you are applying.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be of African, Latino/a, Asian/Pacific Islander or First Nations descent enrolled or admitted to full time in a Th.D. or Ph.D. program in religion, theological studies or biblical studies.
  • Applicants must be within the first two years of their studies (coursework stage) at beginning of the 2021-2022 academic year (September 1, 2021).
  • Applicants who have not yet received notification of admission to a doctoral program at the time of application will be considered pending admission. If available, documentation of acceptance of admission must be submitted to FTE.
  • Students enrolled in or applying to Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) programs are ineligible for this opportunity.

Items to Upload or Complete Within the Application

Applicants are able to save and return to the application prior to submission.

Curriculum Vitae

Please submit your most recent curriculum vitae or resume. It should include at minimum the following: contact information, education, employment history, awards/fellowships, licenses/certifications/publications,academic presentations, professional affiliations, community and church service, skills/interests.

Academic Essay

Include an essay (three page maximum, single spaced) that:

  • your specific area of scholarship (i.e. ethics, biblical studies, religion/culture, etc.);
  • your plans to contribute to theological education, scholarship and to the church;
  • your core vocational commitments and aspirations as a theological educator; and
  • how your core commitments relate to the concerns of a specific community or multiple communities beyond the academy.


Mentoring Statement of Need

Include a statement (one page, single spaced) that addresses the following items:

  • What are the top 3-5 challenges you face in your studies and formation as a theological educator?
  • Aside from funding, what resources or support would help you to address those challenges?
  • What do you hope to gain from mentoring experiences with peers and faculty?


Documents of Acceptance of Admission

Some institutions will not have made all admissions decisions by the time of the application deadline. The committee will consider applications pending admission. If you do have documentation from the institution(s) to which you applied regarding your admission status, upload the documents at the appropriate place within the online application form if available. If you receive notification of admission after the application deadline, please email your documentation of acceptance to Elsie Barnhart, Learning Design Manager.

Items to Mail to FTE

Official transcripts

Copies of official transcripts from your current graduate school must be submitted. For rising 2nd year students, please also provide transcripts from the graduate program immediately preceding your doctoral studies. Student copies of transcripts or grade reports are not acceptable. Transcripts may be sent directly to us from the school. Official transcripts must be received by FTE no later than June 1.
