FTE Doctoral Fellowships General Instructions
The deadline for a completed online application for Pre-Dissertation and Dissertation stage Applicants is February 1. Materials received after this date will not be considered. Use the quick links sidebar to quickly jump to a section of the guidelines.
Completed Application Checklist
A completed application includes:
- One-paragraph biographical profile
- High-resolution headshot (no selfies)
- Curriculum vitae
- Three-page academic essay (maximum length, single spaced)
- Academic form
- Two-page vocational essay (maximum length, single spaced)
- Completed budget statement
- Documentation from your school showing amount of financial assistance to be received
- Two academic letters of reference (one must be a letter from the applicant’s adviser)
- One community letter of reference
- Official transcripts from current (Doctoral) institution (mailed or emailed separately)
Dissertation Stage (ABD)Applicants Only
- Dissertation prospectus and bibliography (maximum length 10 pages, single spaced)
- Provide a list of all members on your dissertation committee, indicating the name of the adviser (to be submitted within the application form)
- One-page abstract of Dissertation
- Writing timeline
- Applicants must be of African, Latino/a, Asian-Pacific Islander or First Nations descent enrolled or admitted full time in a Th.D. or Ph.D. program in religious, theological, or biblical studies.
- Applicants must be finished with coursework by the beginning of the fellowship year (September 1, 2020).
- Applicants at the dissertation stage must be in a position to write full-time during the fellowship year.
- All pre-dissertation applicants must be past the coursework stage but have not yet reached candidacy [ABD].
- To be classified at the dissertation stage [ABD], applicant’s dissertation committee must have approved the dissertation research proposal and writing plan and given the student full approval to proceed before submission of an application.
- Students enrolled in or applying to Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) programs are ineligible for this opportunity.
- Applicants must be studying at an accredited academic institution in the U.S. or Canada.
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, Canadian citizen or permanent resident of either country. International students who hold citizenship and/ or residency outside the U.S. or Canada are not eligible for a fellowship.
Applicants will be notified of selections by the end of April 2020.
Items to Forward
Adviser Letter of Reference:
One letter of reference from the applicant’s adviser is required. For applicants at the dissertation stage, the adviser should comment on the content and design of the dissertation and the applicant’s ability to complete the work in the proposed timeline. A link to this form is provided within the application. Please forward the link to the faculty members who will provide your letter of reference. Letters of Reference must be received by February 1.
Academic Letter of Reference:
One letter of reference from a faculty member on your dissertation committee, other than your adviser is required. If you are not yet at the dissertation stage, you may select a member of the faculty who can attest in detail to the quality of your work and potential as a theological educator. The student’s adviser should write one faculty letter. Each faculty member should comment on the content and design of the dissertation and the applicant’s ability to complete the work in the proposed timeline. A link to this form is provided within the application. Please forward the link to the faculty members who will provide your letter of reference. Letters of Reference must be received by February 1.
Community Letter of Reference:
One letter of reference from a community representative is also required. This letter should attest to the applicant’s commitment to concerns of particular communities beyond the academy. A reference form link is provided within the application. Please forward this link to the community representative who will provide your letter of reference. Letters of Reference must be received by February 1.
Please have the director of graduate studies or the academic dean at your graduate school complete the academic form. This form outlines the specific degree requirements of your program. Applicants at the dissertation stage should be sure to include the date on which the dissertation prospectus was approved. A link to this form is provided within the application and should be forwarded to your director of graduate studies or your dean. Academic form must be received by February 1.
Items to Upload or Complete Within the Application
Applicants are able to save and return to the application prior to submission.
Please submit your most recent curriculum vitae or resume. It should include at a minimum the following: contact information, education, employment history, awards/fellowships, licenses/certifications/publications, academic presentations, professional affiliations, community and church service, skills/interests.
Include an essay (three page maximum, single spaced) that:
- situates yourself within your discipline(s) and describes your specific research interests, focus and methodologies, or scholars whose ideas are most helpful and promising in your work;
- describes your plans to contribute to seminary, college and/or university teaching and scholarship in North America;
- describes how your dissertation project will contribute to theological education and to the church; and
- lists the courses you are now prepared to teach or would like to teach (please list these courses).
Include an essay (two page maximum, single spaced) that indicates:
- your core vocational commitments and aspirations as a theological educator
- how your core commitments relate to the concerns of a specific community or multiple communities beyond the academy; and
- what contribution(s) beyond the academy you hope to make as a theological educator.
Dissertation Committee List (ABD Applicants Only)
Provide a list of all members on your dissertation committee, indicating the name of the adviser (to be submitted within the application form).
Dissertation Prospectus, Abstract and Writing Timeline (ABD Applicants Only)
Your dissertation prospectus of no more than 10 pages is required. In the prospectus, outline the research objectives, conceptual framework, methodology and timeline for completion of your dissertation. In addition to the prospectus and writing timeline, include a one-page abstract of the dissertation with the title of the dissertation included. Finally, please attach the bibliography to the 10-page prospectus.
The budget statement is based on estimated income and expenses for the upcoming academic year 2020-2021. The budget statement must be accompanied by documentation from your institution indicating the amount of financial assistance to be received in 2020–2021. If institutional funding decisions have not yet been made, documentation should be submitted by the institution indicating the amount of financial assistance you are expected to receive. If you will not be receiving financial assistance, you must submit documentation from your institution stating this fact.
Financial Assistance Letter
Some institutions will not have an official financial assistance letter sent to applicants before the application deadline. As soon as this letter becomes available, we request a photocopy be sent to our office. In the meantime, it would be helpful to have a financial officer send a note on letterhead stating the likelihood of a scholarship being awarded.
Items to Mail to FTE
Copies of official transcripts from your current graduate school only must be submitted. Student copies of transcripts or grade reports are not acceptable. Transcripts may be sent directly to us from the school. Official transcripts must be received by FTE no later than February 1.
