Building The Future of Theological Education with Diverse Leaders

The Forum for Theological Exploration (FTE) is dedicated to supporting the next generation of underrepresented and underserved theological educators. Our mission is to identify, support, retain, and place these future leaders in positions where they can significantly impact academia. We achieve this through funding, networking, and professional development opportunities, guiding students toward successful theological education and executive leadership careers.

The Doctoral Fellowship

The FTE Doctoral Fellowship is an essential initiative aimed at supporting the development and success of underrepresented and underserved faculty, especially within predominantly white institutions.

Since its inception in 2013, FTE has awarded 200 Doctoral Fellowships to 165 talented individuals. Of these, 121 have successfully completed their programs, with an impressive 97% now employed in their respective fields. FTE Fellows are making significant contributions to theological education, with 37% serving as faculty at schools affiliated with The Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and 36% at non-ATS institutions. Others are thriving in various roles, including ministry, non-profit organizations, research, and administration within the field of theological education.

A Legacy of Support

Since 1968, FTE has been committed to supporting underrepresented and underserved students in doctoral programs in religion. Our journey began with the establishment of the African American Doctoral Fellowships in 1968, followed by the inclusion of Hispanic Doctoral Fellowships in 1976. This history reflects our ongoing efforts to amplify underrepresented voices in theology.

FTE’s Doctoral Fellowships distinguish our Fellows in terms of placement and long-term success. We take pride in the achievements of both our current and former Fellows. Whether you’re a prospective Fellow or a supporter of this important work, we invite you to join us in shaping the future of theological education. Distilling Wisdom and Key Practices

In recent years, the FTE staff has worked diligently to distill and codify the organization’s accumulated wisdom in vocational discernment for Christian ministry and theological scholarship. This wisdom, gained over 20 years, is being formalized into an online school called DISCERNext. The collective knowledge is organized into essential disciplines and practices to support the exploration and pursuit of Christian ministry and theological scholarship. FTE offers courses for ministry practitioners who work with young adults. It also provides courses for underrepresented and underserved individuals considering a Ph.D. in Religious/Theological Studies or a leadership career at a theological school. Young adults interested in serving God and their communities can also find courses at FTE.
