Ministry Partner Initiatives

The Work with Ministry Leaders

Over the past decade, FTE has built relationships with approximately 2,200 organizational partners through grantmaking, convening, and coordination efforts. In recent years, we have collaborated with around 600 institutions, including 196 coordination grantees from Lilly Endowment, to advance our mission.

Building Networks and Fostering Inclusion

FTE builds on decades of fellowship and grantmaking to strengthen the capacity of institutional networks of ministry leaders. We aim to help these leaders create environments where diverse, inclusive, and equitable approaches to vocational discernment for young adults are both possible and sustainable.

FTE is committed to curating and sharing valuable stories, insights, tools, and resources with the church and academic institutions to advance innovative leadership formation for the next generation.

Distilling Wisdom and Key Practices

In recent years, the FTE staff has worked diligently to distill and codify the organization’s accumulated wisdom in vocational discernment for Christian ministry and theological scholarship. This wisdom, gained over 20 years, is being formalized into an online school called DISCERNext. The collective knowledge is organized into essential disciplines and practices to support the exploration and pursuit of Christian ministry and theological scholarship. FTE offers courses for ministry practitioners who work with young adults. It also provides courses for underrepresented and underserved individuals considering a Ph.D. in Religious/Theological Studies or a leadership career at a theological school. Young adults interested in serving God and their communities can also find courses at FTE.

FTE Discernment Labs

In 2023, FTE launched the Discernment Labs, an important initiative designed to support a variety of collegiate ministries, congregations, and denominational leaders. These labs create a collaborative space where practitioners can share and learn best practices in vocational accompaniment, improving their ability to guide young adults in their discernment journeys.

Ministry Exploration and Mentoring Projects

FTE supports young leaders who are interested in exploring ministry as a vocation by connecting them with congregations in the communities they wish to serve. Through this program, young adults can broaden their understanding of potential roles within the church, learn about innovative models of ministry, and establish meaningful mentoring relationships.

FTE's Festival of Discernment

FTE’s Festival of Discernment is a four-day experience during which ministry leaders will have unique opportunities to discern what’s next concerning God’s calling, their purpose, and the church’s future and work in the world.

All of us find ourselves at a pivotal moment in history, navigating profound transitions amidst social, political, and economic challenges. At times, the world feels broken and divided, and we are yearning for a sense of restored hope and renewed direction. Moments like this call us to dream, compel us to imagine, and invite us to discern the possibility of what’s next for us, our communities of faith, and for our small corner of hope in the world. Even in the face of growing uncertainty, discerning the possibility of what we imagine is impossible is the church’s strength and courage.
